Question: Peter, it's been 35 years since the worldwide release of "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade." In your forthcoming eBook, "Armor of Light: A Trilogy Story, your lead character, Michael is summoned to Petra, why does the "Red Rose City" hold such fascination with us?

"Yes, there is an interesting yearning for a return to classic action adventure suspense fantasy with a biblical archaeology theme.  In the film, 'Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade,' it was the search for the lost 'Holy Grail.' 

The film released Memorial Day Weekend in 1989 was the highest grossing film globally of the year. Petra in Jordan, also known as the 'Red Rose City' became iconic for millions who saw the film and soon placed it as a pilgrimage site visit on their 'bucket list.'  The city was an important trade route with frankincense being a huge commodity.  I thought it would be interesting to explore in the eBook narrative, 'Armor of Light: A Trilogy Story.'   Could one of the three Magi king's entourage have loaded a chest of frankincense from Petra for camel caravan transport to Bethlehem?"

Question: Peter, is it true you met Jonathan Roumie, who plays Jesus in the global hit series, "The Chosen"? Tell us about your connection.

"It was a supreme moment of grace.  My home parish where I was Confirmed is at Saint Monica Catholic Community Church in Santa Monica, California.  In 2018, prior to 'The Chosen' crowd-funded series launch, Jonathan Roumie and Maria Vargo acted and directed a Passion play inside the church called, 'The Last Days.'  As I was seated in the pew, Jonathan in an extraordinary performance was mystically channeling Jesus via the Holy Spirit and walking up the nave of the church.  He was unknown then; however, it was all I could do to remain seated as I wanted to run up and hug 'Jesus.' Here's a few pics of the vintage paper program below:

At the end of the performance, Jonathan and Maria (while still in costume), greeted everyone as we left the east side entrance doors of the church.  I humbly looked up at Jonathan as 'Jesus', wearing a crown of thorns and special effects blood, barely able to say thank you as I was emotionally over-whelmed by the realistic performance.  Then, as I said, 'thank you,' he whispered, 'I saw you.'  This was such a divine consolation, that my soul felt the immediate meaning akin to Nathaniel (also known as Bartholomew) being seen standing under a fig tree by Jesus! Little did I know, Jonathan Roumie was in the room months before when I gave my witness testimony at the men's 'Cornerstone' annual retreat.  Eventually, after the first season of 'The Chosen' streamed, I saw Jonathan again and said, 'This is the role you were born to play.' He was so gracious and thrilled to be blessed with the role."

Question: What an unforgettable moment!  Since that mystical encounter, have you heard anything more from Jonathan?  

"We all have our unique ministries, our calling.  As 'The Chosen' became a worldwide phenomenon, I saw him at the parish.  Truly devout and inspiring to us all.  Here are some pics below that was a dream come true - now beloved by two Popes!"

Question: Peter, you mentioned in our last post your affinity with Howard Carter, the world famous British archaeologist and Egyptologist who was instrumental in discovering the intact tomb of King Tut ( Pharaoh Tutankhamun ). Why are you especially fascinated by him? 

"In my youth, I would dream about seeing King Tut's ancient treasures.  There was a traveling museum exhibit in the USA and I had hoped to attend.  Sadly, I had to sell the tickets to make my final deposit payment on my first trip to Europe. I remembered thinking, 'someday, I'll travel to Egypt and see them at the Cairo Museum.'  And blessed be God forever, it happened!  The pic at the top of this post is of me standing at the entrance to King Tut's tomb located in the Valley of the Kings.  I was fortunate at the time to have actually entered inside the tomb! I later walked to other tombs including Pharaoh Ramesses II.  I explored the area and found hidden staircases descending to unknown tombs (see pic below).  My imagination soared, while being careful not to trespass.  Now, tell me, if you saw a staircase like the one below, wouldn't you find it hard not to investigate?

Question: Wasn't Pharaoh Ramesses II (1303 B.C.E. - 1213 B.C.E.) dynasty mentioned in the Hebrew Bible?

"In Exodus (1:11), 'Accordingly, taskmasters were set over the Israelites to oppress them with forced labor.  Thus they had to build for Pharaoh, the supply cities of Pithum and Raamses (Ramesses).' According to Egyptian Egyptologist, Labib Habachi (1906 - 1994), only one city in antiquity had the name Ramesses: Piramesses.  The sheer scale of building was monumental by the Egyptian Kings of the 19th Dynasty ( 1293 B.C.E. - 1185 B.C.E.).  The pic below shows the massive rock relief figures of Ramesses II in Abu Simbel, which is a location in my book, 'Armor of Light: A Trilogy Story.'"

Question: Do you have a favorite Biblical Scholar to recommend?

"One of my favorite 'go-to' professors of the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament), is Yale University's 'Sterling Award Professor,' Dr. Christine Hayes.  I'm so grateful for Yale University's 'Open Courses' for generously allowing online access to her free, 24 video Hebrew Bible lecture course via YouTube.  If you want to expand your knowledge of the Hebrew Bible while stimulating your brain synapses, I highly recommend watching (repeat viewing too). Best part of all, you don't have to get anxious about the midterm and final paper assignment when she discusses them!

Question: Peter, did you enjoy the research process when developing your forthcoming eBook, "Armor of Light: A Trilogy Story"?

"Absolutely! I've been curious my whole life. I'm fascinated with sacred archives and hidden dusty monastic libraries. Some day if it's the Lord's will, I would like to visit the Vatican Research Archive.  Primary research is imperative versus over relying on digital search engines. God bless Mrs. Ching, my advanced comp class high school teacher, she taught us the importance of primary research.  I was writing a term paper on skydiving and boarded a 1938 rickety twin engine former military plane with a group of skydivers photographing them as they fearlessly bolted out into the sky.  It was certainly an immersive and formative experience."

Question: Tell us about the above pic, where were you?

"I'm standing at the foot of the great temple of Pharaoh Ramesses II, in Abu Simbel, Egypt.  Massive scale designed to intimidate! Here's another pic of me (below) standing inside the inner chamber.  It resonated with me mystically for years and is a plot destination within 'Armor of Light: A Trilogy Story.'"

Question: Were you a young "Indiana Jones?"

"Oh yes, with a blend of Howard Carter! Where's the nearest ancient archaeology dig? Now I'm obsessed with biblical archaeology.  Did you know Pontius Pilate's name was found in the 1960's on a 2,000-year-old ring during an excavation of Herodium ( an ancient fortress and palace south of Bethlehem )? "

Question: While we're on the subject of biblical archaeology, please share your interest with us on the Dead Sea Scrolls.  Is there a particular scroll found in the Qumran Caves that's most intriguing to you?

"Yes, the 'War Scroll' which describes a future cosmic battle between the 'Sons of Light' versus the 'Sons of Darkness.' Scholars have interpreted the scroll as a foreshadowing of the future Roman army invasion which eventually destroyed Jerusalem in 70 C.E.. It's still fascinating to imagine an angelic eschatological cosmic battle in the future which I explored in my book, 'Armor of Light: A Trilogy Story.'"
